S Family – Laura, Brian, Megan, Andrah & Austin {St. Louis Family Portraits Forest Park}

There’s something incredibly special about photographing people you’ve known for years—especially when those people were once your next-door neighbors! This recent family portrait session at The Muny in Forest Park was a great opportunity to catch up with Laura, Brian, Megan, Andrah & Austin – and to meet their two sweet dogs. They reached out to capture this season of life together, and I couldn’t have been more honored.

Including Dogs in Your Family Portraits: Yes, You Should!

When Laura asked if they could bring their two dogs, my answer was an enthusiastic absolutely. Pets are family too, and including them in a session adds personality and fun that you just can’t fake. Sure, it takes a little extra planning—think water breaks, treats, and a leash-holding assistant (thank you, Brian!)—but the payoff is worth it.

One of my favorite shots from the day was of the whole family kneeling in front of the box office of The Muny, both fur babies right in the mix, sitting pretty. There’s just something about seeing everyone—humans and animals alike—together in one frame that captures the spirit of family.

Capturing Connection Over Perfection

One thing I always try to emphasize in family sessions: it’s not about the perfect photo. It’s about the authentic one.

With kids and dogs, there will definitely be moments of chaos—but these are often some of the best moments. These unscripted interactions are what turn a nice photo into a lasting memory1

Thank you, Laura and Brian, for trusting me to preserve this moment in your family’s story. Watching your family grow has been incredible, and documenting it has been even better.

If you’re considering a family portrait session—whether it’s been years since your last or you’re thinking about your very first—I’d love to help you create something meaningful and fun. Bring the kids, bring the dogs, and let’s make some memories.
